This time last year sophomore Luis Quintero was on a tennis scholarship at Shorter University in Georgia. But after a year and a half down south, the Colombian native wanted a change. Quintero set his sights on New York City. In late 2010, he officially transferred to Hunter.

On Saturday, Mar. 26, Hunter College’s men and women’s track team traveled to Farmingdale, Long Island to compete in the Farmingdale Invitational. With 18 top-five finishes on both the men’s and women’s side, the Hawks soared high, proving that 30-degree weather and windy conditions were no obstacles.

Hawks Outdoor Track & Field Gets Underway

The men and women of Hunter Outdoor Track and Field wasted no time in asserting themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the CUNYAC conference and beyond. Both teams kicked off their 2011 CUNYAC season on Mar. 12 at the Queensborough Relays in Bayside, Queens. With six top-three finishes on the women’s side and seven top-five finishes on the men’s side, both sides started their seasons in style.

Lovely Day for Some Tennis – Men’s Tennis Opens Season on St. Patrick’s Day

The Hunter men’s tennis team enjoyed the luck of the Irish as they opened their 2011 CUNYAC season on St. Patrick’s Day. On Mar. 17, the men travelled up to the Bronx, where they took on the Lightning of Lehman College in their first conference matchup of the year. The men were successful in their opener, as they finished off Lehman 7-2.

Competition is Fierce during Yankees’ Spring Training

The Yankees aren’t used to competition, but their Spring Training has been full of it. As the number four and five spots in the starting rotation are up for grabs, pitchers like Freddy Garcia, formerly of the Chicago White Sox, and Bartolo Colón, the 2005 American League Cy Young winner with the Anaheim Angels, are two of the main contenders for the roles.

Women’s Tennis in Pursuit of NCAA Glory

With their 11th consecutive CUNYAC championship this past fall fresh in their minds, the women’s tennis team opened its 2011 spring campaign with eyes on the NCAA Division III tournament in May. In the spring season, the women are playing top ranked teams to prepare themselves for the tourney, including a Mar. 12 match against Division I West Point.

Hunter Sports Roundup – Men’s basketball falls in Semifinals

The men’s basketball team had the last laugh against Baruch this year, as they upset the Bearcats in the opening round of the playoffs in the Baruch gym. The Hawks trailed for most of the game, but pressure defense and some timely hoops provided the impetus for a Hawks comeback. The 68-63 win was one of the highlights of the season.

Gusting winds and freezing weather conditions are usually bad news for tennis fans. But the Hawks’ men’s tennis team has been practicing in the comforts of the school’s B4 gymnasium for about a month. On the weekend of Feb. 19, the Hunter men rolled into their season opening tournament at Drew University, high on confidence, having won the CUNYAC championship in the 2010 season. It was the college’s first title since 1988.
